Personalised gifts that go further than a printed name.
Search "personalised gift" and you will mostly find ordinary objects with a name printed on them. A mug with her initial. A cushion with both your names. A keyring, engraved. These are customised, which is not the same thing as personal — swap the name and the gift works equally well for somebody else entirely. That is a useful test, and almost everything fails it.
The swap test
Ask of any gift: if I changed the name on this, would it still make sense for a different person? If yes, it is a product with a label. If no — if it would become nonsense, because it refers to a specific afternoon or a specific joke or a specific song — then it is genuinely personal. Real personalisation is made of details only the two of you hold.
Gather the material first
The hard part of a personal gift is not buying it. It is remembering properly. Before deciding on a format, spend an evening collecting the raw material, and you will find the gift suggests itself:
- Scroll back to the beginning of your photos together and save the ten that make you laugh — not the ten that look best.
- Write down the dates that matter: the first message, the first trip, the day something changed.
- Note the songs. There is almost always a song, and it is almost never the obvious one.
- Find the phrases you both repeat — the private vocabulary every couple builds without noticing.
- Write one honest paragraph about something she did that you have never properly thanked her for.
That list, on its own, is already a better gift than most of what you were about to buy. The only remaining question is what to put it in.
Choosing a format
A letter is the purest option and costs nothing. A printed photo book works if you have the images to carry it.
